St. Petersburg Inshore and Offshore

Boy it is windy out there!!! But between fronts the fishing has been nothing short of amazing...

Snook is the hot topic around St. Petersburg this time of year. I had Ralph Moore out last Friday taking advantage of the abundance of bait around Tampa Bay. 3 throws and we had enough pilchards to handle the days work. We caught 19 snook and broke off many more in about 4 hours of fishing. We also got a 19" trout on a Yo-Zuri topwater between the spots. The snook were mostly sitting in a trough out… Continue

Stuart offshore and St. Petersburg Black Drum

Stuart:
Just a quick report on fishing last weekend offshore of Stuart. We fished 3/7 and 3/8 on the "Sto Bene" trolling offshore in 80'-200' of water. Saturday was a little slow with 1 sailfish that didn't get hooked and 3 mahi to the boat. One of the mahi, a cow about 20lbs, ate both flat lines before we could get a hook in her. Even though she was tied to 2 lines at the same time, the fight was really good and she didn't give up easily. The other 2 mahi were in the 6-12lb range. We also caugh… Continue

Stuart offshore 3/3/09

Another great day out on the "Sto Bene" this week. Had some friends of the boat owner over for a fishing trip on Tuesday. We started out at 9:30am in decent N 3'-4' manageable seas and ran SE out of St. Lucie. The water was cool, around 68 inshore out to a small temp break. At about 175' the water color began to change and the temp came up to 72. Out went the naked swimming ballyhoo and in 5 minutes we had our first strike. We caught mahi in the 5-12lb range steadily for the next few hours. Our… Continue

Stuart Offshore and St. Petersburg Flats Fishing

Stuart...
Fished 2 days on the "Sto Bene" out of Stuart last weekend. Weather was much better than the experts predicted. Fishing however was a bit slower than I would have expected. Ran out of the Inlet on Saturday straight to a wreck to catch bait. Mix of sardines and cigar minnows were plentiful in 60'. From there we ran down to an edge off the Loran Tower ledge. Great rip in 220' clear on one side and weeds and trash all balled up on the shallow side. Dropped the baits in and 5 minutes into… Continue

Ft. Myers offshore report

With the grouper season closed in the Gulf of Mexico it's hard to find a reason to burn all the fuel to go offshore fishing. I got a phone call from my friend Terry asking if I would like to do an overnight out of Ft. Myers. With hopes of big night time snapper on my mind off I went to meet them. We left the dock about 10am due to tide and boat draft problems but it would not affect our fishing. The ride out was really foggy with visibility less that 1/2 mile. Good thing for radar or it would ha… Continue
